Chocolate Chip Poetry

Poem from a recipe (Chocolate Chip Cookies)
To make chocolate chip cookies is really quite simple
With a few easy steps
These beauties will look like angels
Let’s start with the first few ingredients:
2 ¼ cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
Mix it all together and you’ve got yourself a- HALT!
We have more to do, but that isn’t your fault.
So pay attention now, then this will become your default.
In a separate bowl
Beat, but be sure not to heat:
2 sticks of butter
¾ cup sugar
¾ cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Be sure the brown sugar is packed,
Making sure you are on the right track.
In that bowl,
Add the full,
2 large eggs, one at a time,
To ensure your cookies taste divine.
Beating after each addition
Should be your current mission
Next is the step that is close to being the best,
Add 2 cups of chocolate chips,
Forming bonds like friendship,
When you add these little bits.
One by one
Put the cookies on the pan
No need to scan for cookie perfection
Once finished put the tray in the convection,
that is set to 375° F for 20-25 minutes.

BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, your cookies have arrived with absolutely no limits.

Poem of how to make a recipe into a poem
To make a recipe in the form of a poem,
One must start with a hum.
Once you have the beat,
Pick up your feet, to create your anthem.
Start with the measurements and the ingredients.
While making your list,
Throw in a dash of wit,
just enough to make it a hit.
Now we explain the instructions.
Don’t go through great pains to make the poem function.
Just let it flow, from junction to junction.
Treat it like the food you’ve been preparing to stick in the oven.
Now read it,
Tweak it,
Show us what you know
For a food is only as good as what the recipe shows

  1. This post was enjoyable to read because of the light and humorous tone. I liked that a lot of rhyme was incorporated, although sometimes it seemed a little forced. I think you did well to blend together the baking instructions with your own poetry, and create a happy balance between the two. Overall it was a fun read, but made me hungry for some cookies. Now I'm sad I don't have any cookies :(

  2. Ah, yes. It's too bad that blog technology hasn't progressed to the point where a post could offer us a fresh-baked cookie at the end. I like the playfulness of this, Nina, and your use of rhyme to poetify the recipe.

  3. I thought this was very fun. I'm sure the results of the recipe are great, and it was nice to get to "talk" to the recipe instead of having it be solely informational. Nice job!

  4. I love your "Poem of how to make a recipe into a poem." Although the recipe was very good as well, the shorter length makes the poetic devices pop out. For some reason, while reading it a second time my brain tried to fit it to the rhythm of "Ice Ice Baby." The lines "To make a recipe in the form of a poem," "Pick up your feet, to create your anthem." and "Don’t go through great pains to make the poem function. / Just let it flow, from junction to junction." are the ones that evoke it. I think it's the group of shorter syllables followed by longer syllables.

  5. This is very creative and engaging for the reader. It's humorous, playful, and well written! I liked the way that the recipe still felt musical as a poem even though it is still, in fact, a recipe. Great Work!
